Discovering Relatives
WHILST CORRESPONDING WITH OMA AND OPA in Argentina, I had been told of an aunt and uncle who lived in Copenhagen, Denmark. I had no idea how this could be an aunt. Mutti only had one sister and she lived in Germany. I could only conclude that the relationship came from one of Omaâs brothers or perhaps sisters. I knew nothing of family further back than my own grandparents. The Argentinian correspondent had given me the address. I wrote to them a few times and they replied asking me to come and visit them. No chance, no money.
I had been in correspondence with a German Lawyer called Herr Doctor Loeb who lived in London and represented many of the refugees in Germany who were able to claim reparation. A delightful little man â he really was very small, as was his wife. They lived in Golders Green, London. So when I had the chance eventually to visit London, I met them both for the first time. After many years of my lawyer writing and visiting Germany, things at last came to a surprising conclusion. I had many forms to complete, information to pass on until I thought there could not possibly be anything the German authorities did not know about me. Now they wanted to know where I had received my education. The name of the college and even the name of the headmaster. Mr Davies, the Head, had always taken a great interest in my education and was very proud when I passed all my exams. Now he sent me a copy of two letters. One he had received from Germany asking his opinion of my ability to go on to further education. The other was his reply. I was amazed and very pleased at this reply. He emphatically informed Germany that, had I had the opportunities denied me by circumstances, he was sure that I had had the ability to go on to university and attain whatever I set my mind on. I wrote and thanked him also expressed my surprise at his flattering comments. He replied to my letter informing me that he had done no more than write the truth. This very flattering comment had a very important effect on me. Suddenly, the derogatory remarks my husband so often made about my abilities, no longer had the same effect on me. If Mr Davies had so much faith in my abilities, who was Sid to keep putting me down. Now I stood up for myself, I think for the first time.
A letter arrived for me from Herr Loeb, my attorney, telling me that Germany had granted me the immense sum of £250 for âloss of educationâ. I had never had so much money in my life and was certainly not putting it into the business as my husband wished. No way was this man getting his hands on my money yet again. I gave this immense amount of money a great deal of thought. I
